How to Prepare

Be Present

Redemptive Labs are a unique time for us to unplug, be present, learn, listen, and encourage. While we know everyone is busy with much to do outside of the event, we ask that everyone be fully present during this gathering. Our events are unlike a typical conference where you may step away and take a call; they are customized for each participant, intentional, and relational -- each person plays a key role in each session. Since we only have a short time together, we ask that founders plan to be completely unplugged during events.

PRESENCE: We have much to cover and want to ensure you get the most out of your time.

It will be important for you to block the lab dates so that your team and family know you will be unavailable while you are away. We host a tech-free environment during the program. We will provide printed workbooks and encourage you to bring a notebook/journal. We consider it a gift to retreat from our devices as we engage in deeper thought, conversation and fellowship with one another - we hope you will, too!

PARTICIPATION: The quality of the peer and mentor experience largely depends on the level of participation from each of the founders.

With your peers, we will have intentional times of group sharing and reflection. We have found that this format is key to building your shared experience together. We know that there are varied comfort levels here, but we encourage you to actively contribute to both sharing and active listening. With the mentors, you will be in small group sessions and one-on-ones, and they will look to you to drive the questions and discussions. During informal times and meals, take the initiative to walk with or sit next to a mentor you’d like to get to know better. They will welcome it!

CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE: Submitting ourselves to honest humility and self-awareness will allow all community members to flourish.

  • Authenticity. The old adage applies strongly to our mentors who may have the ability to give: “ask for money and you’ll get advice, ask for advice and you may get money.” Our mentors expect to help with your biggest challenges, not get pitched, and they understand that not everything is working perfectly.

  • Cultivate Space for Diversity. Don’t assume everyone’s theology, socioeconomic, social, or other background is the same - in fact, assume it’s not! Our central hallway is believing in and pursuing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Beyond that, we hope to widely represent Christ's body and learn from each other in humility. If you tend to be long-winded, be concise to create space for others. If you’re typically the first to speak, make sure to listen. If you’re ‘in the majority’, create space for the voice of others.

  • Act Virtuously. We believe our community’s collective witness is best understood by our way of life, not merely the work we do. We hope that Redemptive Labs clearly represents a group of people who embody the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love and the cardinal virtues of wisdom, moderation, courage, and justice.

Your 4-Minute Personal Story

  • Each founder will share an informal personal narrative with fellow founders and the Labs team on the first night.

  • This is simply a time to share a condensed version of your life story or a major life inflection point. It should focus more on your off-the-record story and what God has done in your life rather than your accomplishments.

  • We ask that you spend some time thinking about it in advance, just to be considerate of time — decks are not needed: we just want to hear from you.

1:1 Mentor Sessions

On Day 2 of the Redemptive Lab, we’ll be joined by a group of mentors, who will share some of their experiences via a panel, 1:1 mentoring sessions, and informal times over meals. Here are a few ways to prepare well:

  • Review the agenda so you’re familiar with the sessions and flow.

  • Develop a list of questions or advice that are specific to your venture and its situation that you may want to ask them in a 1:1 conversation.

  • Develop a list of questions that are not specific to your venture that may enrich the conversation and drive the mentors beyond basic 101 level content to enhance group learning.

Your 4-Minute Pitch Deck

On Day 2 of the Lab, each founder team will share a 4-minute Venture Pitch. You’ll need to send this in advance to keep the event flow smooth, as we will compile all presentations into one deck to avoid technical issues. The pitch is not about raising capital but about sharing the story of your venture (the why, what, and how), its redemptive opportunity, and ways that the mentors and your peers can help you.

  • Final Decks are due EOD on May 30; send to MadisonRedemptiveLabs@gmail.com (this is a hard deadline).

  • Submit decks in a Google Slides or a PPT file format.

  • Talk is to be 4 minutes max (presentation will be ended at 4 minutes).
